Sometimes, a story suggests itself to us when we are looking for something else on Google Maps, but something grabs our attention. That was how we saw “O Maneta”, a road on Google Maps that wasn’t called “Something Road” or “Overthing Street”…. it was just “O Maneta”.

After all, the name given by Google isn’t exactly right, but the road sign at the entrance to the village of Forninho didn’t disappoint.

Obviously, we went looking for someone who could tell us the story of the maneta (in English, the one-armed man) who got to have a road named after him, with his name and his nickname (officially recognised by the Post Office, see below from their site www.ctt.pt).

And we found Lino Delgadinho, the great grandson of Augusto Ferreira (o Maneta), who today runs the family winery that sells a wine named “Monte Maneta” in homage to his ancestor, and who kindly spared us some time.

And these are some photos we took at the Adega of Monte Maneta, the family quinta of Augusto Ferreira and Lino Delgadinho.
